Empower, Mentor, Represent!!!
What is a Peer Advocate?
- Peer advocacy consists of a variety of support
services provided by a peer with experience in the HIV community.
A peer advocate is able to share what they have learned. The support
services a peer can provide range from being able to attend a medical
appointment with you to telling you about a resource that they have
found helpful in the community.
What Can a Peer Advocate Do for Me?
- A peer advocate can:
- provide emotional support and encouragement.
- provide advice and suggestions.
- provide information about resources and community events.
- help you to become empowered and more knowledgeable.
- keep in touch and be there when you need someone to listen
.
How Is Peer Advocacy Different from Case Management?
- Case management involves assessment of needs,
development of a care plan, and coordination of services identified
as being needed. Case management focuses attention on specific problems.
A professional trained in the human service or nursing profession
generally provides case management services.
How Often Will I Have Contact with my Peer Advocate?
- The peer advocate will usually contact you
at least once per month. The peer advocate will call you on a regular
basis, let you know about activities you might be interested in, and
will meet with you when needed. If you want to schedule an appointment
with your peer advocate, just call and request it. Don't feel you
have to wait for the peer advocate to first contact you. Things happen
and come up, so feel free to make contact when you need help.
When Can I See or Call My Peer Advocate?
- Your peer advocate will tell you about their
work hours. Peer advocates are available only from Monday through
Friday at regular working hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will also
discuss the best way to reach them. They are not available 24 hours
a day or weekends.
