The UCSD Mother, Child and Adolescent Program helps each youth who is moving from Pediatric to Adolescent Clinic. When a child is “aging-up” at around age 12-14, the youth is invited to participate in a 4-6 week group made to assist HIV+ youth over the age of 12 years feel more comfortable moving from pediatric care into adolescent primary care.

Some of the goals of this program are:

  • Make sure that there is a smooth transition for the youth from one clinic (pediatrics) to another (adolescent).
  • To talk about concerns and fears that the youth may have regarding this change in clinics.
  • To help the youth become more independent with a sense of responsibility for their own health care.
  • To educate about HIV disease, sexuality, and general health and to support medical adherence.
  • To teach the youth how to be more assertive and to communicate his/her needs with health care staff and with their peer group.
